Adaptive introgression: how polyploidy reshapes gene flow landscapes

چکیده
Rare yet accumulating evidence in both plants and animals shows that whole genome duplication (WGD, leading to polyploidy) can break down reproductive barriers, facilitating gene flow between otherwise isolated species. Recent population genomic studies wild, outcrossing Arabidopsis arenosa lyrata indicate this WGD-potentiated be adaptive highly specific response particular environmental intracellular challenges. The mechanistic basis of WGD-mediated easing species barrier strength seems primarily lie the relative dosage each parental endosperm. While generalisations about polyploids fraught, indicates breakdown these combined with diploid polyploid polyploids, allows some act as adaptable ‘allelic sponges’, enjoying increased potential respond challenging environments.

Adaptive gene introgression after secondary contact
By hybridization and backcrossing, alleles can surmount species boundaries and be incorporated into the genome of a related species. This introgression of genes is of particular evolutionary relevance if it involves the transfer of adaptations between populations. However, any beneficial allele will typically be associated with other alien alleles that are often deleterious and hamper the intro...
متن کاملGene-flow in a mosaic hybrid zone: is local introgression adaptive?
Genome-wide scans of genetic differentiation between hybridizing taxa can identify genome regions with unusual rates of introgression. Regions of high differentiation might represent barriers to gene flow, while regions of low differentiation might indicate adaptive introgression-the spread of selectively beneficial alleles between reproductively isolated genetic backgrounds. Here we conduct a ...
متن کاملRepeated Adaptive Introgression at a Gene under Multiallelic Balancing Selection
Recently diverged species typically have incomplete reproductive barriers, allowing introgression of genetic material from one species into the genomic background of the other. The role of natural selection in preventing or promoting introgression remains contentious. Because of genomic co-adaptation, some chromosomal fragments are expected to be selected against in the new background and resis...
متن کاملGene Conversion Facilitates Adaptive Evolution on Rugged Fitness Landscapes.
Gene conversion is a ubiquitous phenomenon that leads to the exchange of genetic information between homologous DNA regions and maintains coevolving multi-gene families in most prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms. In this paper, we study its implications for the evolution of a single functional gene with a silenced duplicate, using two different models of evolution on rugged fitness landscapes...
